Rejection at Nazareth (Luke 4:14-30)

It was curiosity that took me there.

Joseph’s boy surprising us

By turning rabbi:

And doing well

By all accounts.

He spoke well, I suppose,

Though I’m no judge

Of things like that.

But then a shift,

As though a chill wind

Blew through the synagogue

Replacing the summer heat.

He spoke of grace

Not just for us, God’s chosen,

But for all:

Unleashing fury

As he seemed to question

Our special status.

I left then, fearing the mob,

Though I hear

That in the end

He evaded them.

I wonder what

Will become of him

If he does not change

His message.
