The silence of God (for our own wilderness times)

Silence

Is a complex thing.

At times restful,

At other times frightening;

Sometimes bewildering.

Your silence, God -

So often when we long most

To hear you -

Defies our explanation,

Though some try.

Somehow the answers

Seem facile,

Springing from

Our need to explain you

When we cannot;

Our desire to fix

When brokenness

Is inevitable,

To place an ineffectual plaster

On life’s haemorrhage.

Sometimes, perhaps,

The best thing we can do

Is say we do not know

But walk with one another

Nonetheless.
